Third grade has been looking at Ancient Greek art and dissecting the idea of hybrid. They identified the animals that compose various hybrids, and learned some of the names of these mythological creatures. We also looked at some hybrids that appear in popular culture, and discussed reasons why the idea of a hybrid is powerful and enduring.
The third graders then reflected on their own personalities and came up with adjectives that describe their finest traits. They then chose animals that embodied these traits and experimented in sketch format with different ways of combining these animals.
They are currently working on turning these sketches into three dimensional fiber sculptures using sewing techniques they have practiced.
